Strong medical need for better fixation
More than half of all fractures are in weak bone. This means about nine million fractures each year. In total, it is estimated that more than 100 million screws are used for fracture fixation per year. This makes screws the most commonly used orthopedic implants.
Of the 1.7M fragility fractures in the United States each year, 300,000 are in the hip, and 200,000 of those are fixed with osteosynthesis procedures.
A third party market investigation showed that surgeons are very willing to take on a new product for hip fracture fixation, if it reduces complications and reoperation rates, and improves device stability, even if there is a higher price for this.
