Scientific background
The work leading to the Zolidd product started with professor Per Aspenberg, orthopedic surgeon, and professor Pentti Tengvall, biomaterial researcher, joining efforts. Professor Aspenberg had visions for local delivery of bisphosphonate, local delivery with good control of dosage and with little extra efforts during surgery. Professor Tengvall, on the other hand, had strong knowledge in biomaterials, and good ideas for the use of proteins in drug delivery.
Their publications on the early version of the Zolidd concept, can be found on PubMed:

Bisphosphonate in conjunction with implants is getting more and more attention. Several research groups publish articles on how local bisphosphonate creates stronger bone around implants in different animal models, and speculates how this could improve implants in humans. The studies performed by professor Aspenberg and his coworkes on dental implants and knee prostheses, are the among the very first clinical studies with locally delivered bisphosphonate.
